At the time of the search there were estimated to be fewer than two hundred Newfoundland ponies left on the Island; so the search was long and it was quickly learned that the selection was limited. The initial thoughts were to seek a larger breeding pair (greater than 14hh), but that goal was found to be unattainable and we settled for what we could find; although all in all we did very well.
