Newfoundland Pony Society

About the Society

The Newfoundland Pony Society was founded in 1979 and was incorporated in 1981 as a Registered Charity (#899 123 053 RRO 001). The Society convinced the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that the Newfoundland Pony was a living part of the province’s cultural history and as such, required legal protection before there were too few ponies to maintain a healthy population. This initiative resulted in the Heritage Animals Act being passed on December 19, 1996. The Newfoundland Pony and the Newfoundland Pony Society received their official designation under this Act September 15, 1997.
The Society’s Objects and Duties under the Act are as follows:
  • promote an appreciation for and an awareness of the Newfoundland Pony;
  • support and contribute to the preservation and renewal of the Newfoundland Pony; and
  • contribute to the increase and dissemination of knowledge about the Newfoundland Pony.
  • define the characteristics of the Newfoundland Pony;
  • prescribe the method of establishing a breed book for the Newfoundland Pony;
  • keep and maintain a registry of Newfoundland Ponies within the province;
  • enforce those provisions of this Act and any regulations made under it as prescribed by the minister; and
  • prescribe by-laws for the enforcement of their duties under this section.
The Designation Order specifies:

Saving The Newfoundland Pony

Circa 1993:- The Newfoundland Pony was about to become extinct when a handful of local Newfoundlanders stepped into the breach and formed the Newfoundland Pony Society. They mounted a campaign to save the breed for future generations to enjoy. This is their story as told in this historic video.
The Barnes Family of Manuals are the people that sold us the breeding pair of Starr of the Sea and Black Beauty. Both these animals have prominent rolls in the movie especially Beauty. She is the mare that wouldn't nurse her little foal. Watch and enjoy this wonderful story.
